Consuelo Bertomeu, the first florist of the region

When something is beautiful in itself, and at the same time it is combined with a multitude of shapes and colors, this becomes art, and no one better than Consuelo Bertomeu, an 83 year old olive tree grower, living in Denia since the year 40, to do this job. Consuelo Bertomeu began this work at a very early age. Learning this trade in Barcelona where, according to her. was in Barcelona, where the best bouquets and centers were made at that time. Consuelo arrives to Denia in 1940 in very difficult and complicated times, commenting that in those times in Denia and the region, there was no one who was dedicated to floristry, since the flowers that adorned the houses or were taken to the cemetery were grown in small gardens of private property, and also there were not many varieties of flowers known. The florist started her small business in her own home, later moving to the municipal market. For a moment, tears appear in this woman’s eyes as she remembers those years when there was more concern about putting even one plate of food a day on the table. When All Saints’ Day arrived, a great effort was always made to take some flowers to the cemetery; this veteran florist was helped at all times by her daughter, Consuelo Martínez, who together with her husband, the multifaceted Pepe Llorca, actor, singer, poet and floral artist, managed not only to maintain the business, but also to take it further in her flower shop Hortiflor, in the Marquesado, in Denia. they make with all delicacy the precious bridal bouquets, centerpieces, decorations for the church. as well as various crowns. Consuelo Martínez told LAS PROVINCIAS that although it may seem a lie, this is a very hard job, because for a bouquet to be perfect it takes many hours of work and imagination, as well as having the utmost care because today we work with very beautiful but very delicate flowers, the slightest carelessness spoil the work done for hours, also told us that the most important thing, for a good job, is the selection of flowers, as they must always be of the highest confidence and quality and you have to go to look for them wherever you are.

Large and loyal clientele

Pepe Llorca told LAS PROVINCIAS that his clientele has always been very large and loyal, as in his flower shop are served that in his day, being girls accompanied their mothers and grandmothers and today are they with their children, who come for the flowers and of course, as today are they with their children who are filled with pride Pepe told us that his store serves customers throughout the Marina and also receive orders from Valencia and Alicante, which they themselves are responsible for carrying. This couple is happy that their daughter, Manolita, is continuing the family business.
